Westmeath is a county in the Republic of Ireland and is situated in the middle of the island of Ireland. The county forms part of the province of Leinster and is commonly referred to as the ‘Lake County’. The population of the county is approximately 79,500 with the main town being Mullingar.

The county was once part of County Meath and was separated under the Meath and Westmeath Act of 1543.

The county is known for its bovine industry and apparently it is also the goat capital of Ireland.
